Interesting critique Dusco. In theory, on the design desk it is possible to do any level of water treatment and produce extremely high quality MBR effluent. Especially if we generalise with claims that membranes "always" produce better quality water,,,,,,,, errrrrrrrr,,,,,, except for the colour!!! There are several other methods that can be used to remove trace colour from otherwise clean water such as adsorption media and IX columns. In fact your reference by Anjaneyulu et al., lists adsorption techniques as one the most effective and proven technology having potential application in both water and waste water treatment. And, the biological process of an MBR can be supplemented with coagulant or polymers or reactive agents to provide enhanced filtrate performance when a higher product water quality is required. Reality is that MBR and CAS processes have their pros and cons. Sensible clients will base their technology decision on a sound engineering consulting basis and not generalised statements.
