Sediment/sludge removal from the water supply system

Please share details of the process/equipment you are using at your plant to reduce the sludge or sediments from community water supply.

I work at Newport News Waterworks, Virginia. Recently I have been given a task to design or purchase equipment to remove sludge accumulating in our water treatment basins. The water treatment basin is 7-8 ft. (~2.5 m) deep and we are currently using the Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) process.

The simplest method is to ensure that all your reservoir or sedimentation tank has got scour valve, then in the afternoon or at night you open scour valve and reduce/ remove sludge.

Hi Lee; There are major ...

Hi Lee; There are major changes happening in water collection, uses, and waste recovery.  As part of the Zero waste program many are returning to mother nature for the ultimate answers.  Dr Carl H. Oppenheimer discover a new species of microbe that breaks down organic material into their elemental/nutritional form. He has worked with these microbes since the 1940,s Cleaned oil spills and chemical contaminated sites using a process known as bioremediation. Taught this technology at University of Texas from 1964 to 1989. Retired and went into business for himself.  When using these microbes in the waste cleaning process chlorine is eliminated. Microbes are applied during the agitation cycle. Provides oxygen. Odor is eliminated. Water is clear. All sludge and slim are eliminated. Water can be discharged into rivers , lakes or what ever.

The finished product has been tested and no pathogens found. All micronutrients in water are in elemental/nutritional form.  Independent labs report potable  state. In addition to cleaning the water during this process of removing electrons from the covalent bonds that make compounds many fall away and are then easily collected and used as a source of electricity.  Not much but let nothing go to waste.   We are now working on a residential unit. Our long term goal is to eliminate waste transport infrastructure. No more dumping into rivers to Oceans. Safe, sustainable, self reliance,. Security for you and your family No grid to protect.  Everybody wins.  Details if interested.   512-567-9700 .

interesting to see the difference in Wastewater and Water DAF backgrounds.  Some overlap.  I take it that some solids have been interfering with the influent headers. It will be interesting to see what wins out.  Drain, clean and fill, or some mechanical removal during normal operation (or something in-between).

Lee,  we have been successfully removing sludge from waste water systems in Australia, New Zealand and Ireland for many years. We have had success in Texas on small sewage systems where we not only removed sludge but kep the entire system lean. Our product also massivelky lowers maintenance costs. Please email me directly and we will send you case studies etc. etc.

Dear lee, Clean, safe water ...

Dear lee,

Clean, safe water is vital for every day life. Water is essential for health, hygiene and the productivity of our community. The water treatment process may vary slightly at different locations, depending on the technology of the plant and the water it needs to process, but the basic principles are largely the same. This section describes standard water treatment processes. Sedimentation  is a physical water treatment process using gravity to remove suspendes solids from water. Solid particles entrained by the turbulence of moving water may be removed naturally by sedimentation in the still water of lakes and oceans. Settling basins are ponds constructed for the purpose of removing entrained solids by sedimentation. Clarifiers are tanks built with mechanical means for continuous removal of solids being deposited by sedimentation for the treatment of that sludge; filter first and then dry the sludge.

To remove the sludge from your sedimentation tank you should put at the bottom a valve that can be opened during the operation of maintenance of the treatment plan to evacuate the sludge. This sludge partially recycles to back of the clarifier and rest collected to sludge lagoon for dryness.  The sludge is distributed to basins with free capacity according to a loading plan. In this way, dewatering is optimised, thereby securing a high dry matter percentage, and prolonging the life of the sludge reed bed system. The loading rate of the system and basin level is computed on an ongoing basis.

Hello Lee, I am an ...

Hello Lee,

I am an ex-Virginian and lived out on the Northern Neck for some time.

Our technology works on Targeted Beneficial microbes.  We have over 300 species available to us to match the particular situation.  We always sample first and then personalize our consortium (most times over 70 species) and deliver an amount on site to be treated on site and then inoculated into the sludge.  This can be done on a specific treatment program so that you would never have to deal with sludge in the future.  The original inoculation would be to eliminate the problem and then the follow up would be a much less cost maintenance program.  The microbes are all started and grown at our facility in Troup Texas.

Please free to call my Mobile (603 501-9730) for further discussion and clarification.   Best, Joe

The sludge from the top and bottom of DAF needs to be digested first then dewatered by the screw press or filter press.

Hi! Firstly, it would be better if you shared the process flow diagram. Anyway, there is a drain valve in the bottom of the DAF system to get rid of the sludge, if not, you have you use a submersible pump after stopping the air system and give time for sludge to accumulate at the basin.
